Start your career in catering and hospitality with free training at Space Station! Part of the Employment and Training service at Space and Broomhouse Hub, this eight-week course starts Monday 26th September and includes a recognised qualification in food hygiene as well as leading onto hands on skills and experience in our community cafe.

Attendees will cover the foundations of the food and hospitality sector, including barista skills, baking, cooking, food preparation and customer service. Graduates will also receive a Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) qualification in Food Hygiene which is recognised across the food services industry.

The course is aimed at those who have experienced barriers to employment, such as learning difficulties or other disabilities, mental health problems, long term unemployment or a lack of qualifications.

Lyndsey Fischer, Learning and Wellbeing Manager at Space said:

“This course addresses several issues in society, barriers to work for various members of the community as well as a general shortage of workers within the hospitality sector.

“Over the eight weeks, attendees will get a through grounding in many of the skills businesses are looking for. We also include on the job training in our own Community Café here at Space or with our external partners.

“In addition, we provide employability advice, confidence and wellbeing training and support to find paid employment. This is a course designed to support job seekers into work by overcoming the barriers in their way.”

Richard Ellis, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce added:

“The Scottish Tourism Alliance recently said there are 45,000 vacancies within the hospitality sector across Scotland and our biggest cities are bearing the brunt of that shortfall. We have seen the issue directly affecting our members in Edinburgh.

“We welcome this initiative being launched by Space and hope it helps in alleviating the staffing crisis many businesses are experiencing.”

Sessions take place on Monday afternoons from 1.00-3.30pm There are places available on the next course which is open for registration now.
