Yesterday evening the entirety of the Youth & Families service came together for a trip to the pantomime! An incredible 250 children and young people from the Youth Befriending, Big Hearts Befriending, Young Carers, Bookbug, Friday Night Youth Club, and PHEW projects – along with volunteers and staff – travelled through to the Howden Park Centre in Livingston to watch the Martin and Martin Theatre Company’s production of ‘Mother Goose’. All but a few seats in the auditorium were filled by people from The Broomhouse Hub!
A fantastic event for all ages, Maw Goose and her strange but loveable family put on an excellent performance and entertained with a great modern take on the tale of the goose that lay the golden eggs. Everyone had great fun getting involved and singing along to the music, cheering on Lucy Goose, and booing the pantomime villains!
At the end of the show, Amanda Farquhar, Youth & Families Services Manager, stepped up to the stage and surprised everyone with the good news. Thanks to the kind donation of £1,000 from Johnston Smillie last month, all of the young people received Christmas presents this year – each received a warm, cosy blanket and a box of chocolates! The volunteers also received a gift each as a thank you for their contribution to the Youth & Families teams.
Everyone had something good to say about the pantomime, with many expressing how much they really enjoyed it. This kind of event is also a great opportunity for young people from different Youth & Families projects to interact with one another. The service provides support to children from a wide range of ages, and some are designed to help young people at risk of isolation or in need of mental health support. The young ones were excellent representatives for Broomhouse on this trip, with the children helping one another on and off the coaches in the snow, sharing snacks with each other in the theatre, and helping to clean up at the end of the show.
“The kids all had a great time, it was excellent.” – Amanda, Youth & Families Services Manager
A well organised effort by the whole of the Youth & Families team – it is no easy feat to arrange such an event (and travel) for 250 young people all at once! Thank you to all of the staff members and volunteers that helped to make this event possible!
The work that the Youth & Families team carry out on a day-to-day basis, and the positive impact they have on young peoples’ lives is nothing short of extraordinary.
